# Generate shots, stills and sound without leaving DaVinci Resolve

> Install the Layer plugin for DaVinci Resolve Studio and generate video, images and audio, edit the current frame or a clip the plugin placed, and put every result on your timeline at the playhead.

---

An edit for a game is never only the footage you captured. A launch trailer needs a shot of the
gate the engine cannot render yet. A store video needs a still for the end card. A cutscene
animatic needs something in the gaps before the real shots exist, and every social cut needs a
riser, a hit and a line of voice-over. Each of those is too small to commission and too specific
to find in a library.

The Layer plugin puts generation beside the Edit page. Describe the shot, pick from what comes
back, and it lands on a new track at the playhead, ready to trim.

## What it does on a timeline

**Generate shots, stills and sound.** Video for missing shots and transitions, images for end
cards and title plates, audio for the sound effects and voice-over a cut needs. Every result is
imported into a `Layer` bin and placed on a new track at the playhead, so your existing clips
are never touched.

**Edit what you are looking at.** Use the current frame as it appears in the viewer, graded and
composited, and change it with a prompt, reframe it for a vertical placement or raise its
resolution. A clip the plugin placed can be read back and edited, reframed or upscaled as video.

**Keep the work with the project.** Sessions are bound to the Resolve project itself, so each
project has one Layer session that follows it through renames. Generation runs on Layer's
infrastructure rather than on your machine, so playback and renders are not competing with it.

## Where it fits a game team

Trailers, store videos, cutscene previz and social cuts are all built on a timeline, and most of
them are short a few shots on the day they are due. This plugin is for that gap: the supporting
footage, stills and sound around the shots you have, made inside the edit that needs them. For
DaVinci Resolve Studio 19 and newer on macOS and Windows.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is there a Layer plugin for DaVinci Resolve?

Yes. Download the installer for your platform from this page, a .pkg for macOS or an .exe for Windows, and double-click it. Then restart DaVinci Resolve and open Workspace → Workflow Integrations → Layer AI. The plugin generates onto the timeline you already have open.

### Does it work in the free version of DaVinci Resolve?

No. The plugin is a Workflow Integration plugin, and Blackmagic Design makes Workflow Integrations available in DaVinci Resolve Studio only. With Resolve Studio installed, the Workspace → Workflow Integrations menu lists Layer AI once the installer has run.

### Which DaVinci Resolve versions are supported?

DaVinci Resolve Studio 19.0 and newer, on macOS and Windows. The exact minimum for the current build is listed beside the download above.

### How do I install it?

Run the installer. The macOS .pkg is signed and notarized by Apple and the Windows .exe is code-signed, and each puts the plugin where Resolve looks for Workflow Integration plugins and changes nothing else. There is no folder to copy and no script to run. Restart Resolve afterwards so it picks the plugin up.

### What can the plugin generate?

Video, images and audio. Describe a shot, a still or a sound and the result comes back as a clip in a Layer bin in your media pool. You can also edit the frame under the playhead with a prompt, reframe or upscale it, and edit, reframe or upscale a video clip the plugin placed for you.

### Where do the results go?

Into a bin called Layer in the media pool, and onto a new track at the playhead. The plugin never edits a clip that is already on your timeline, so nothing you cut is changed behind your back. With no timeline open, the result waits in the bin.

### Can it read my timeline?

It reads the frame you are looking at, as the viewer shows it after grading and compositing, so an edit starts from the picture you actually see. It can also read back any clip the plugin itself placed, wherever you have moved it. Reading an arbitrary clip back would mean rendering it, so the plugin says what it can act on rather than guessing.

### Can I paint a mask for an edit?

Not from Resolve. Its masks are Fusion and Color page nodes rather than a selection the plugin can read, so the plugin does not offer the masked edit tools here. Edits apply to the whole frame or clip.

### Do I need a Layer account?

Yes. Sign in from the plugin with the same account you use at layer.ai. The plugin is free with every plan, and generations draw on your workspace's Creative Units, so what you make in Resolve bills exactly as it would in the browser.

### Do my generations show up in Layer?

Yes. Each Resolve project gets its own Layer session, kept with the project even if you rename it, and everything you generate is saved there. Open the session in the browser and the creative behind your edit is all in one place.
