# Character Turnarounds Your Modeler Can Measure From

> Get a character turnaround your 3D modeler can measure: flat front, three-quarter, side and back views on one ground line, at one scale, with shared guides.

## Messages to send, and what they made

### “Design a sky-pirate engineer for my action RPG, then make a character turnaround sheet for our 3D modeler.”

- ![A five-view turnaround of a sky-pirate engineer in a navy coat and aviator cap with a mechanical wing-pack, with callouts for the wing-pack, a wrench and a boot](https://media.app.layer.ai/workspaces/9602107e-865b-47e5-b66e-87b1bec5e3d5/files/d6045656-0293-4c48-ac6c-753140a0203f/character_sheet_create_one_productiontier_fullbody_2d_orthographic-2026-09-26-003919.png)

Five views on shared guide lines, including a rear three-quarter for the wing-pack on the back. The callouts cover the wing-pack, the wrench and the boot, the parts a modeler would otherwise guess at.

### “Make a character turnaround sheet of a stout dwarven blacksmith for my strategy game: front, three-quarter, side and back.”

- ![A four-view turnaround of a stout dwarven blacksmith with a braided beard, leather apron and hammer, labeled front, front three-quarter, side profile and back](https://media.app.layer.ai/workspaces/9602107e-865b-47e5-b66e-87b1bec5e3d5/files/14c6261c-4910-4899-ba38-eadd94f6172b/character_sheet_create_one_unified_2d_production_turnaround_sheet-2026-09-26-003924.png)

The dwarf stands four and a half heads tall in every view, and the beard, apron and hammer land on the same guide lines from front to back.

Hand a 3D modeler a hero pose and they start guessing. The camera hides the back of the coat, foreshortens the arm that reaches toward you and changes scale from the boots to the hat. Drawing a proper turnaround by hand takes a concept artist hours of lining up the same belt across four views.

Describe the character and add "turnaround sheet for our 3D modeler", or attach a design you have already approved. You do not specify the views, the pose or the guide lines. Layer draws flat views on one ground line at one scale and runs the guides across the whole sheet.

## What a Modeler Needs on the Page

**One ground line**
Every view stands on the same line at the same height, so nothing drifts in scale.

**Guides across the sheet**
Crown, eye line, chin, shoulders, waist and knees run as horizontal lines through every view.

**Arms clear of the body**
A relaxed A-pose keeps the silhouette readable from the side and from behind.

Proportions are stated in heads and held in every view, which is what keeps a four-and-a-half-head dwarf from growing taller in profile. Where the back matters, as with a wing-pack or a cape, the sheet gets a rear three-quarter view too.

## New Characters and Approved Ones

Start from nothing and Layer designs the character and its turnaround in the same conversation. Start from art your team has signed off and the sheet follows that design. Ask for callouts when the gear is complicated, such as a pack that folds or armor that overlaps, and the sheet adds close-ups beside the views.

## Take It Into 3D

Download the sheet as a high-resolution PNG for your modeler, or take the design straight to 3D: see [3D models from four views](/use-cases/four-view-3d-models). For the character's face in every mood, see [expression sheets](/use-cases/character-expression-sheet).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why flat views instead of a dynamic angle?

Because a modeler measures them. Perspective foreshortens limbs and shifts scale across the figure. Flat views on one ground line keep every size true, and the eye line, chin, shoulders, belt and knees land on the same guides in every view.

### Which views do I get?

Front, three-quarter, side and back. Layer adds a rear three-quarter when the back carries detail, such as a wing-pack or a cape, and drops the second side view when the design is symmetric.

### What pose is the character in?

A relaxed A-pose with the arms clear of the body, so the silhouette holds up from every side. Action and personality poses belong on a separate pose sheet.

### Will the proportions hold across views?

Yes, measured in heads. The dwarf on this page is four and a half heads tall in every view. If your roster uses a set head count, name it, and every sheet you make uses the same measure.

### Can I turn a character I already have into a turnaround?

Yes. Attach the approved design and ask for its turnaround. For engine import you can ask for each angle as its own file instead, but separate files do not share guide lines the way views on one sheet do.

### Can it add construction callouts?

Yes. Ask for callouts and Layer adds close-ups of the gear a modeler needs to understand, such as buckles, tools and armor plates.
