# Creature Families Grown from One Adult Design

> Show one creature at every age or in every element. Layer designs the adult first and derives each form from it, so its signature features hold throughout.

## Messages to send, and what they made

### “Design a kirin for my RPG as an isolated game-ready asset on a transparent background, full body visible, then show its life cycle: foal, yearling, adult and ancient.”

The foal has the horn bud, short muzzle and large eyes of a young animal, and the ancient is heavier, with a tall, weathered horn. The flame-tipped mane and tail carry through all four stages.

### “Design a fox spirit companion for my adventure game as a game-ready asset, then make fire, ice and storm variants of it.”

The split tail, the forehead sigil and the cream markings hold in every form, while the pose changes with the element: a raised forepaw for fire, a calm sit for ice and a sprinter's crouch for storm.

A creature that grows up or takes an elemental form has to be recognizable in every state. Write each stage as its own prompt and the set comes back as cousins, with a horn that branches differently every time.

Name the creature and the states you want, such as foal, yearling, adult and ancient, or fire, ice and storm. Layer designs the adult first, settles which features must survive every form, and derives each one from that adult image. You skip redrawing the horn four times and checking that it still matches.

## Growth Comes Off, History Goes On

Layer treats age as anatomy. Going younger, it takes growth away: the kirin foal gets a horn bud, a shorter muzzle and larger eyes. Going older, it adds history, so the ancient carries more weight and a taller, weathered horn. The body plan and the surface family stay put at every age, and scales stay scales.

Posture changes with age too. A foal that stands like an adult reads as a shrunken adult, so the yearling is lanky and long-legged and the ancient settles into its weight.

## Anatomy Held, Pose Free

**What makes it this creature**
Two or three features, like the fox's split tail and forehead sigil, are named up front and checked on every form.

**One step from the adult**
Each form comes straight from the approved adult and never from its neighbor, so drift has no chain to travel down.

**A pose for each form**
The fire fox raises a paw and the storm fox crouches to run, because a set frozen in one stance looks like a specimen drawer.

## More Forms, Same Source

Each form is delivered as a separate transparent PNG for Unity, Unreal, Godot or GameMaker, or for your animators to rig. Ask for a new form in the same session and it is derived from the same adult, so a later evolution sits beside the first ones.

For a set of different creatures, see [game enemy design](/use-cases/game-enemy-design). For a boss with phase states, see [boss design](/use-cases/game-boss-design).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why derive the stages instead of describing each one?

Because the same words do not produce the same animal. Describe four stages from scratch and you get four related creatures, with horns that branch differently and markings that wander. Deriving every stage from the approved adult image keeps it one creature.

### Why is the adult the starting point?

It is the only stage with every feature fully grown and nothing yet worn away. Younger stages are reached by taking growth away, and older ones by adding weathering and wear. Starting from the foal would mean inventing everything that comes after it.

### Does each stage come from the one before it?

No. Every stage comes straight from the adult, because a chain of foal to yearling to adult lets small changes pile up until the two ends are different animals. The trade-off is that neighboring stages can step less smoothly than a hand-drawn progression would, so expect to judge the set as a whole.

### What stays fixed, and what is free to change?

Two or three features that make it recognizably this creature stay fixed, such as its silhouette, a signature part and its surface, and Layer checks every form against them. Pose changes, so a foal does not stand like an adult.

### Can I start from a creature I already have?

Yes. Attach your design and ask for its life cycle or its variants. Layer derives them from your image without designing a new creature first.

### How is this different from designing a roster?

A roster is several creatures, each its own design. Variants are one creature in several states, so they share one design. See [game enemy design](/use-cases/game-enemy-design) for rosters.
