## Messages to send, and what they made

### “Make a sound effects pack for my cozy match-3 game: tile swap, match of three, cascade combo, booster activation, level complete and out of moves. Give me three takes of each so repeats don't sound identical.”

The cascade combo climbs in pitch and the out-of-moves tone falls, so players hear a reward and a dead end apart before they look at the board.

### “Design the combat sounds for my dungeon crawler: sword swing, shield block, arrow hit, potion drink and enemy death. They should feel heavy and sit together as one pack.”

The heavy sword swing sets the weight, and the block, the arrow hit, the potion and the death are built to sit beside it in the same dungeon.

### “Create sounds for a crystal golem that doesn't exist in nature: footstep, idle rumble, attack roar, and a shatter when it dies.”

Nobody has recorded a crystal golem, so every sound is built from materials that exist, like stone slabs for the footstep, a slow crystal resonance for the idle and a stone fracture for the death.

---

Most sound effects in an early build come from whichever library had something close. The tile swap is from one pack and the level-complete sting from another, and when a cascade fires five sounds at once they blur into one bright wash.

List the moments in plain words, the way you would for a sound designer: tile swap, match of three, out of moves. Layer designs each sound and plans the pack as a whole, so you skip the library search and the afternoon spent auditioning near misses.

## Pitch Tells Players What Happened

Rising, consonant sounds read as a reward and falling ones as a failure, and players hear the difference before they look. In the match-3 pack above, the cascade combo climbs through a run of gem pops while the out-of-moves tone steps down on soft wood. Layer settles the direction of each sound when it plans the pack, since no edit afterwards can turn a falling sound into a rising one.

## Invented Creatures, Real Materials

Foley artists have always faked the things nobody can record. Breaking bone is snapped celery, and fire is crinkled cellophane. Layer works the same way, so a crystal golem gets its footstep from grinding stone slabs and its death from a stone fracture, sounds a microphone has heard. For something stranger, give a real sound one property it should not have, like struck glass that rises instead of fading.

## Before the Pack Goes In

Clips download as MP3 or WAV. Run the pack through a [Workflow](/features/workflows) to trim the silence ahead of each hit and level every clip in one pass. Normalize the pack as a whole, so no single clip sticks out. See [sound effects](/features/sound-effects) for more on sound generation in Layer.

For music in the same world, see [orchestral game music](/use-cases/orchestral-game-music), [adaptive game music](/use-cases/adaptive-game-music) and [music from your game art](/use-cases/image-to-game-music).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Will the pack hold up when several sounds fire at once?

Yes, because the pack is planned as a mix. Impacts sit low, movement sits in the low mids, and the brightest band goes to the one sound the player must never miss, such as the match or the hit confirmation. When every sound in a pack is bright, a big combo turns to mud.

### Can Layer make sounds for creatures that don't exist?

Yes. Describe the creature and what it is made of. Layer builds each sound the way foley artists do, with real materials standing in for the fiction, as with the stone slabs and crystal under the golem above.

### How do I keep footsteps from sounding robotic?

Ask for several takes. A core action wants three to five takes that share a material and an onset and differ only in the strike, and your engine should pick one at random with a little pitch variation. Takes that change surface sound like the ground itself is changing.

### Do the clips need cleanup before they go in the engine?

Sometimes. A clip can arrive with a few milliseconds of silence before the hit, which plays as input lag, and loudness varies from clip to clip. Trim and normalize the whole pack in one pass before you import it.
