Layer Update (Feb ‘25) - The rise of video📽️

As we get deeper into the new year, we’re seeing some big trends in the gen-AI space. A big one, of course, has been the rise of video generation in a relatively short period of time. With video generation coming out last month on Layer, we’ve already added models like Veo 2 and Kling 1.6 Pro to the mix, as well as Wan 2.1 just a few days ago. Another good reason to stick with a model-agnostic platform - you never know when a new one is going to drop!

We’re also excited to share some big updates to the platform, including the ability to export 2D assets as vectors, drag and drop images to create prompts, and longer video generations - alongside many more improvements (below 👇).

Platform Updates ⚙️

Improvements and changes to the Layer platform.

New Features

  • Taking image formatting to the final frontier. Covering the full spectrum of studio usecases, we updated our suite of “refine” tools to now support vectorization, background removal, and upscaling for images. This is key for game studios that need flexible, transparent assets that can be layered into game scenes.
  • Better security measures for generation volume. To ensure bad actors are not introducing any issues into our system, we added improved rate-limiting into the Layer app, slowing down any suspiciously large amounts of generations.
  • Longer and better video generations. Let’s be honest, working with a short video snippet can be tough at times, so we added longer video duration for certain supported models.
  • Automatically enhanced prompts for lazy writers. This month includes support for “auto-translate” and “auto-enhance” in the prompt form, so you can always get a bit of help when you need it with more detailed prompts.

Platform Improvements

  • Added a new alert banner that appears in the Layer app to let you know if there are any outages or technical issues.
  • Added new org sorting options, including the ability to filter out suspended users on Members page. The page also now shows the total workspace users.
  • Improved performance on Canvas by moving the storage of temporary assets to not be part of the primary canvas object.
  • General stability and performance improvements inside the Canvas and app pages.

Looking Ahead 🔮

We’ve been moving a million miles a minute in 2025 so far - and we’re just getting ramped up. Outside of our core product updates, we’re growing quickly as a team, which will allow us to ship faster and better in the coming months.

Next month we’re driving towards some big updates around our UI/UX and general user experience - we really want to make sure using the Layer app is seamless and intuitive to use, especially compared to “standard” tools creators are familiar with. We’re also planning to add our V2 of Refine tools to support batch updates and character specific animations.

We’re also working on some more updates around 3D and video: A/T pose generations for animation rigging, and first/last frame creation for video production.

See you soon.
