New 3D models: Trellis 3D, Tripo AI, & Rodin now on Layer

The world of AI-powered 3D content creation is rapidly evolving, and we’re committed to giving our game studio partners access to the best the industry has to offer through our private, compliant, and model agnostic platform.

With our latest updates, we’re thrilled to announce new cutting-edge 3D models inside the Layer tool: Trellis 3D by Microsoft and Rodin by Hyper3d will be joining our initial model offering, Tripo AI. These additions mark a big step in making Layer the ultimate end-to-end creative platform for gamedevs - for 2D, 3D, and beyond. All 3D generation tools are currently available for Layer Pro, Studio, and Enterprise accounts.

When we launched our 3D generation tools, we started with Tripo AI, a flexible model perfect for prototyping at high speeds. While this was a great starting point, we knew there was a need for more models, especially ones with technical features designed to import 3D assets into game engines. When using these models within the Layer platform your data is safe with us.

Trellis 3D: The industry standard for quality.

At the heart of our latest update is Trellis 3D, a next-gen AI model developed by Microsoft that sets a new benchmark for 3D asset creation. Designed to generate high-quality assets from image prompts, Trellis 3D utilizes a powerful Structured LATent (SLAT) representation to decode into various output formats, including Radiance Fields, 3D Gaussians, and traditional meshes.

This versatility is perfect for direct use in game engines like Unity or Unreal Engine.

Adaptable Across Formats: Trellis 3D streamlines the creation of Radiance Fields, 3D Gaussians, and meshes, offering unparalleled flexibility to meet diverse downstream demands.

Unparalleled Detail and Adaptability: Backed by pre-trained models with up to 2 billion parameters, Trellis delivers exceptional quality and consistency across use cases.

Streamlined Integration: Simplifies the process of incorporating 3D assets into complex pipelines.

What truly sets Trellis 3D apart is its scale and quality. Trained on a massive dataset of over 500,000 diverse objects, it offers game creators unmatched efficiency and creativity. Layer is proud to be the first and fastest platform to integrate Trellis 3D into an AI-powered creative suite, providing game studios with early access to this groundbreaking tool.

Rodin: Making ideation easier

Next up is Rodin, a model which generates high-quality quad-meshes (composed of quadrilaterals rather than triangles). These quad meshes are more topologically consistent, allowing for cleaner texture mappings and edge flow.

Rodin excels at creating organic character shapes, which can be easily edited and animated for your game.

Organic Sculpting: Perfect for characters and creatures with complex anatomical details.

Preset Library: Accelerate workflows with customizable presets for common asset types.

Seamless Export Options: Easily export assets for further refinement in your preferred tools.

Whether you’re designing a new game character, environments/levels, or game items, Rodin is perfect for creating smoother assets without sacrificing quality - ideal for bringing into a game engine.

3D Model comparison

One of Layer’s strengths lies in its ability to offer a variety of 3D generation models, each tailored to specific needs. To provide a clearer picture, we’ve included a comparison chart of the models available on Layer—Trellis, Tripo, and Rodin—alongside other solutions we’re exploring for the future like Shutterstock’s NVIDIA Edify-powered offering.

*Ability to create meshes using quads rather than triangles. Generally corresponds with a more  “regularized” mesh (variance of face size, repeatability of face, etc). Important for runtime rendering optimizations.

*Edify 3D model from NVIDIA/Shutterstock planned for future release on Layer.

Everything you need in one platform

Game development is a complex, multi-disciplinary process. One of the biggest challenges studios face is the constant need to jump between tools - from 2D to 3D, audio, video, and more. This disrupts workflows, adds complexity, and drives up costs. Moreover, having team members collaborate on a single unified pipeline that’s kept private and secure is nearly impossible. Layer is solving this problem by building an end-to-end creative platform that integrates all these capabilities into a single, cohesive toolset.

With the addition of Trellis and Rodin in addition to Tripo, we’re making it just a little bit easier to create everything you need in one place. Whether you’re an indie team or a AAA studio, our goal is for you to concentrate on bringing your creations to life - not juggle work between a bunch of expensive tools.
